SSAC adds Women’s Flag Football as Championship Sport
CUTHBERT, Ga. - Beginning with the 2026-27 season, women's flag football will be recognized as a championship sport. The Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) announced the addition Wednesday, Dec. 10.
Effective July 1, 2026, Andrew College will join the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics and compete in the Southern States Athletic Conference.
Andrew joins seven SSAC members and two affiliate schools that will sponsor women's flag football for the upcoming season: Wesleyan College, Brewton-Parker College, Life University, Point University, Thomas University, the University of Tennessee Southern, Milligan University and Reinhardt University.
During the 2025-26 season, women's flag football was approved by the NAIA's National Administrative Council as an invitational sport and will feature 35 programs competing across the association. Postseason play will then shift to a qualification-based invitational tournament.
The 2027 SSAC championship is expected to be held April 22-24 in Montgomery, Alabama.
"Adding women's flag football as an SSAC championship sport expands opportunities for women to compete at a high level in one of the fastest-growing sports in the country," said SSAC Commissioner Mike Hall. "We're excited to align with the NAIA's vision and the broader momentum around the sport as we build schedules, championships and a first-class experience for our student-athletes."
Andrew College is a National Junior College Athletic Association Division I school located in Cuthbert, Georgia. The Fighting Tigers sponsor 14 sports and compete in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association. Andrew College will move to the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, effective July 1, 2026.
